We bring you some updates and numbers from the 22nd Ignition Event by Commercialization Reactor (CR) – unique matchmaking platform for ambitious entrepreneurs and world-class scientific teams to launch their deep-tech startups – which took place on October 6th & 7th, 2023!

European Startups Trip In China 2023: Innovation, Collaboration and Commercialization Reactor
European startups CONELUM Biotech and InLable , both born in the Commercialization Reactor (CR), a science commercialization platform, went on a trip to China to celebrate the grand opening of the Humboldt-InnoEU (Suzhou) Innovation Center on September 11th.
Situated in Sungent I-Park, SIP, with a mission to bridge exchanges and cooperation between China and Europe in the realm of science and technology innovation, the centre is a collaborative effort between HUMBOLDT-INNOVATION, representing Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and InnoEU Tech Bridge.
The grand opening ceremony included:
• warm welcome from HUMBOLDT-INNOVATION President, Volker Hofmann
• speech on new materials sector in Europe from Managing director at INAM – Innovation Network for Advanced Materials – Oliver Hasse
• keynote by Anton Adamovitch, Managing Partner at CR, on the unique approach of Deep-Tech Startup Creation via provoking symbiotic relationship between Scientists and Entrepreneurs based on know-how methodology of CR

🎉 Exciting news for Elogium on receiving seed investment! 🌱
We are thrilled to announce that Elogium, a deep-tech biotech start-up, has secured a significant investment of EUR 500,000 from the Commercialization Reactor Seed Fund and biotope by VIB (biotope ventures) last month. This investment marks a major milestone for Elogium and will be used to build up a dossier for application for product authorization in the EU market.
Born in Commercialization Reactor during one of their Ignition Events, and with a mission to revolutionize the poultry industry, Elogium develops a probiotic chicken broiler feed additive. It improves the feed conversion, which allows for more sustainable and profitable broiler farming, as well as eliminates campylobacter in chicken gut system.
Elogium is led by its CEO Karlis Udris, who co-founded the company alongside Katarina Šimunović, Elogium’s Chief Technology Officer. Katarina is not only a driving force behind Elogium’s technology but also a researcher at the University of Ljubljana (University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty). With a dedicated scientific team, Elogium is well-equipped to bring their innovative solution to market.

❗️Congratulations to EMPYRIO on raising investment 🏆💶
EMPYRIO, a deep-tech start-up born in Commercialization Reactor, develops compact sewage sludge utilization system for on-site installation at small and medium size wastewater treatment plants to provide costs savings, decentralization and waste circular approach.
In 2022 EMPYRIO received first patents in the Eurasian countries and in the USA. Patents in Canada, China and Europe are in pending process. 💡
In the end of 2022 EMPYRIO raised EUR 650K seed investment from EIT InnoEnergy, which is the largest energy and circular economy investment fund in Europe, and Commercialization Reactor Seed Fund. With additional financial aid of EUR 129K from Norway Grant (EEA and Norway Grants), within 2023 EMPYRIO will develop and demonstrate an industrial scale prototype. After succeeding in this the company will be raising the next investment round, which will bring the product to the market.

We are excited to announce that 🚀 The 20th Ignition Event 🚀 which took place on November 11th & 12th, was a huge success, with 12 innovative business ideas presented from 10 showcased technologies! 🌟The event is organized by the Commercialization Reactor, an international platform for science commercialization, in partnership with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia and European Institute of Innovation and Technology, in scope of the EIT Jumpstarter program.
During the 20th Ignition Event, 10 scientists from 6 countries presented their technologies and innovations to more than 70 entrepreneurial-minded individuals from multiple countries, who then picked technologies of most interest and formed a total of 12 teams, which will continue into the Founders’ Dive program, created by the Commercialization Reactor aimed specifically at deep-tech projects. The 20th Ignition Event is right around the corner!
On November 11-12, 2022, create your business based on science that inspires! During the event, entrepreneurial-minded individuals will be able to attend a technology showcase, where pre-selected scientists from multiple countries will present their scientific achievements. After choosing a technology, entrepreneurs will be able to form a high-potential science-based business with scientists.
Deep-tech proto-companies created during the Ignition Event will be eligible for up to €50.000 pre-seed funding from Commercialization Reactor Fund with an opportunity to receive seed funding afterwards.

Adianano raised half a million pushing the new limits of Lithium-ion batteries ❗️🏆❗️
Adianano, which was born in Commercialization Reactor and is now relocating from Latvia to Poland, has raised 500K EUR investment, 250K EUR of which from GT Technologies, a Venture Capital fund from Poland, and 250K EUR investment from Commercialization Reactor Seed Fund, Latvia.
To continue their development, Adianano:
• has expanded their team with a scientist from Warsaw University of Technology
• is setting up a laboratory in Warsaw, Poland, to start producing materials for pilot tests with their clients scaled to industry capacity.
• will work alongside Fraunhofer ISIT (Germany) on active anode material formula development.
Adianano’s goal is reaching the first sales. The team will be conducting tests according to specifications issued by their prospect clients to achieve product market fit, as well as filing a patent and developing a blueprint of scaled-up production device.
These have been truly eventful news and we wish Adianano to further enrich their potential and achieve even greater milestones❗️

🤩 We are excited to announce that “Cutting-Edge Entrepreneurship” online training program, intended for participants from Latvia, started last week on September 14th🌟 with two workshops behind and a few more to go!

Commercialization Reactor Fund in cooperation with “Altum” is calling out 🔬 early-stage deep-tech start-ups to apply for the “9th Acceleration Program”✨ More than 250 applicants have been reviewed so far, 45 have participated in the program, 35 of them have finished it and almost 1,5 M EUR were invested in total 🌟
Commercialization Reactor is an international platform for science commercialization founded in 2009 with a goal to build new, meaningful companies based on scientific and technological achievements.
Commercialization Reactor Fund provides up to 💶 EUR 50 000 of pre-seed investments and an Acceleration program for early stage deep-tech start-ups. It runs over 6 months and focuses on customer and market development.

After six accelerated batches with science-based start-ups, the Commercialization Reactor Pre-Seed fund has got his very first EXIT! A novel Diesel-LPG retrofitting technology-based start-up Artusystem, has attracted further investments being a trigger for the Fund to exit.
The Artusystem Dual-Fuel is built on the Artusystem technology and allows operating the Diesel engine with a mix of LPG as a primary fuel and use of 20% Diesel fuel as a secondary fuel. The Artusystem Dual-Fuel is designed for use in passenger cars and light duty vehicles with an engine displacement of up to 3 litres, allowing both private users and businesses to save cost and emissions by up to 50%!

TerraWaste has been selected as one of the 3 finalists in the Innovation category at the Rimi Baltic Sustainability Awards out of more than 320 applicants! A jury of international experts has selected the finalists, and the award ceremony will take place online on the 9th of December!
TerraWaste technology is based on hydrothermal liquefaction, which allows the transformation of organic and inorganic waste into bio-liquid under the influence of high pressure and temperature. Mixed waste is recycled and turned into bio-crude oil.

Venture entrepreneurial partner is an experienced entrepreneur, who created a deep-tech start-up at the Ignition Event, and is now a part of the Commercialization Reactor community.
In order to become VEP, entrepreneurs should show their commitment and attitude to their start-up and Commercialization Reactor community. VEP’srole is to help teams to get pre-seed investment readiness; share the experience – both positive and negative; give their advice; share network and contacts.

14 scientist technologies from different areas like AI, new materials, space, environment, etc., were presented at our 18th Ignition Event organized together with the Investment and development agency of Latvia (LIAA)! More than 100 participants took part at the Day-1, and on the second day, entrepreneurs together with scientists were working on their very first pitch, which was presented to the panel of investors.

PurOceans pilot project at Freeport of Riga (Rīgas Brīvosta)!
It was incredible, to see our 14th Ignition Event resident PurOceans technology working live. That`s a big step for them, and we hope bigger milestones to be achieved in the near future!
PurOceans have developed revolutionary technology that removes 98% of seabed pollution through their patented method called Deep Water Rehabilitation.
Currently, they are testing their technology at Freeport of Riga, by cleaning the water bottom of various oil waste.

Great news! Our resident Catalyco won the Nordic Pitch Match at sTARTUp Day 2021! Well done, Reinis Spunde!
Nordic Pitch Match is a flash competition of university research-based companies initiated by the University of Tartu, which took place for the fifth time this year.
Catalyco, the winner of the Nordic Pitch Match, is a producer of high surface area zinc oxides for applications in the tire and rubber industry, ceramics and glass industry, and chemical industry. They offer a unique product with an extra high surface area (100 m2/g) and lower impurities comparing to other producers.

Starting from 26th July the new board of the Commercialization Reactor Fund steps in. It is represented by Nikolai Adamovitch, Ilona Gulchak, and Kaspars Vjaters.
I.Gulchak will be chairing the company, continuing also to ensure oversight of the investment process. K.Vjaters will be ensuring the deep-tech start-up community management and development. He will also be responsible for administrative and technical processes. N.Adamovitch continues his role as a board member being responsible for the creation of deep-tech teams and for ensuring support to the created start-ups (acceleration).
Voldemārs Brēdiķis and Lelde Stukle, stepping down from the Board, will continue as members of the pre-seed and seed Investment committees.
The investment period for the Commercialization Reactor Pre-seed fund is enhanced for 1 year, hence new acceleration programs and new investments are planned into deep–tech companies. Up to now, the fund has invested into 28 companies and the total investment amount has reached EUR 940 000 EUR.
The Commercialization Reactor Seed Fund is also currently in active investment phase. So far 2 investments have been made with the total committed amount EUR 350 000.

As part of the Vigo Health Seed investment round Commercialization Reactor Seed Fund is investing 100k EUR!
Vigo is a digital therapeutics solution that helps stroke patients recover faster and more effectively using evidence-based CBT techniques, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence.
Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the world, affecting 15 million new people every year. The majority of them suffer from post-stroke depression (PSD) and it severely inhibits rehabilitation potential. Motivational counseling and psychological support can help, but it’s expensive, not available to many, and there are simply not enough psychotherapists in the world to serve every stroke patient.
Their mission is to bring clinically validated therapy to make stroke recovery way more accessible and effective.

Catalyco, a company born in Commercialization Reactor has raised the first part of the seed round. Commercialization Reactor Seed Fund is to invest up to 250 000 EUR into the company with a unique production method and specifically ZnO product with higher surface area and low impurities.
Catalyco solves the problem for tire and rubber products manufacturers who will be forced to reduce ZnO content in tires and rubber products according to upcoming legislation. Catalyco’s product is proven to reduce the overall consumption of ZnO in rubber products by up to 80% and improve the environmental footprint for their customers.
The technology has also other various applications in chemical industry, like adsorbents and catalysts and circular economy approach to use waste streams for production of advanced ZnO products.
Catalyco previously received investments from Commercialization Reactor Pre-seed fund of EUR 50 000 and attracted other financing in the amount of EUR 395 000. Now Catalyco is looking for co-investors to match Commercialization Reactor Seed investment.

We are happy to announce, that the 5th acceleration program has finished! 4 teams, which were born in the 15th Ignition Event, successfully finished the program, got positive feedback from industrial partners, and will continue their rapid business development.As always, at the end of the acceleration program, start-ups have their Demo Day. This time, their Demo Day was participation at the Deep Tech Start-up Competition at Deep Tech Atelier, organized together with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA). We heard amazing pitches from the 5th Batch teams: Crystals Growing, DetectQ, EmiBLUE, and Spatialite Antenna Systems, after which they had to answer questions from our experienced, knowledgeable, and amazing jury members. You never know unless you try! This quote perfectly describes our 2020, because we have tried so many new things this year and in our opinion, they went really well! Ignition events were organized both online and offline, we had Masterclasses for the first time, finished and started new acceleration programs, etc.
For us, this was a very challenging but at the same time interesting year. We didn`t give up, we moved on! And we will keep moving forward in 2021 as well! This year was full of opportunities, we tried many new things which in the end gave us a different perspective and opened our eyes to new possibilities.

This Tuesday, the Founder and Visionary of the Commercialization Reactor Nikolai Adamovitch had a speech at the Technology Commercialization and IP Management Workshop organized by EIT European Institute of Innovation and Technology (Regional Executive Academy | Powered by the Cross-KIC RIS Project). Last weekend Commercialization Reactor took part in Act in Space 2020 Latvia hackathon. Our Founder and Visionary Nikolai Adamovitch was one of the jury members and gave 2 prizes from Commercialization Reactor: 3-hour consultation on “How to start your space business”
An amazing, 24-hour job was done by teams! 2 teams, who got our prize was “3D Constellation” and “The Builders”! 
3D Constellation – they will use satellite images to construct a real-time altitude map for remote territories that are hard to monitor using nanosatellites.
The Builders – by using technology which is used in the space, they will create compact, light-weighted, and resilient structures to reduce risks of mortality in the battlefields, and of soldiers getting injuries.

Our resident PurOceans is now a part of the SUBMARINER Network. The SUBMARINER Network is a unique platform that brings actors from the whole Baltic Sea Region together to actively promote innovative and sustainable uses of marine resources.

Andrii Shekhirev came to our 16th Ignition Event organized together with the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (Latvijas Investīciju un attīstības aģentūra – LIAA) just to take a look. He is a serial entrepreneur who is planning to organize a biotechnology focused event in Riga this November. But Andrii stayed at the Ignition Event right to the end and even pitched on stage!

Eventech was born as a start-up of Latvia based science commercialization and start-up acceleration platform “Commercialization Reactor”. With experience and approved approach of deep-tech start-up acceleration, the initial start-up has turned into the company that collaborates with ESA and NASA. Already in 2016, ESA was awarded Eventech with a contract, and in 2017 the company signed an agreement with British space technology company Neptec, which works together with NASA, the ESA, Airbus, the UK Space Agency, and other institutions to develop a part of the landing systems for the LUNA-27 module. Eventech is proudly and deservedly becoming part of a world-wide “space society”. This is a meaningful international success both for Latvian science achievements and for science commercialization.

Together, with EIT – European Institute of Innovation and Technology we ran the first online Mini Ignition Event. As always, during the two days, the scientific teams worked together with ambitious entrepreneurs, creating a proto company, finding potential applications, analyzing possible customers, etc.

Latvia becomes member of European Space Agency (ESA)!
This week, June 24 2020, the Council of the European Space Agency (ESA) approved Latvia as an associated Member State of ESA. This will open up new opportunities for Latvian scientists and entrepreneurs to cooperate with the European space industry, as well as to promote research and study base of universities.
One of our residents – Eventech has been successfully working within PECS (Plan for European Cooperating States) program, transferring technology to the Space level and participating at various ESA missions. This new agreement (associated member) will give more opportunities to the Eventech and other space companies, as this it implies closer cooperation with all space industry and giving access to ESA competences.

Amazing news: one of the winners of CleanWaterHackathon – Commercialization Reactor resident PurOceans Technology. PurOceans – eco-friendly technology that cleans up waterbody’s bottom from oil, microplastic and chemical sediments. The technology removes 98% of pollutants from the bottom without excavation of soil/lifting water, or usage of any chemical/biological substances that may harm the flora and fauna.

What a great experience and show – for the first time we had a Demo day online. 12 teams were pitching to profiled VCs and were challenged by a panel of investors afterwards. A fresh view on the pitches was provided by a comedian Rūdolfs Kugrēns but the investors voted for the most investable startup and Vigo Health Latvija took a lead in that (congrats!).

We are proud to announce that companies from Batch 3 have finished their acceleration with us and now are heading to make an impact in the selected industries. They represent different fields: automotive, AI, health-tech, and new materials. During the acceleration program they have achieved a lot: the market is proven, first customers and industrial partners are attracted, and pilots are planned. Some of the companies have launched their products. Our congratulations to: 2AM, Artusystem, Correcty, Hyrevision, Vigo and Soberly.
Commercialization Reactor is running an acceleration program for Batch 4 now, meanwhile we are welcoming teams to apply for our next acceleration program (Batch 5), which will start in the fall.

Our residents are actively participating in various competitions, challenges, programs, etc. and quite often are amongst the finalists or main prize winners. Last week 7 our start-ups were shortlisted in 2 significant EIT events:
– 4 out of 7 participants in the EIT InnoEnergy PowerUp Latvia finals, are residents of Commercialization Reactor: Artusystem, Squad Robotics, Empyrio, EnergoPlus. According to opinion polls Squad Robotics was named as the best start-up in this challenge.
– 3 of our residents (Hyrevision, PurOceans, Empyrio) were selected from 20+ start-ups in EIT Climate-KIC. Currently, they are signing investment agreements and joining EIT Climate-KIC`s program.
We are proud of the teams’ achievements and will keep supporting them on their way to further success!

Commercialization Reactor Fund is taking a part in CrisisLab organized by 5 Universities in Latvia. For 2 weeks 250 students will be working on 25 challenges provided by ministries, corporates, and NGOs, in order to address challenges in different sectors, emerged by Covid-19 crises. We are providing mentorship for teams working with environment-friendly packaging, remote and virtual learning.

– “XtraBREATH” project is on a mission to provide affordable and easy-to-deploy breathing systems based on the core competence of the world-class scientific team. The system generates 100% pure oxygen for medical treatment purposes.
– “CoolTech” project has a low cost and environment friendly solution, that destroy the virus by covering its shell with a liquid natural alkaline substance keeping the surface clean for at least 3-5 days.

Following the rules with regards to emergency situation and fully supporting the “Stay at home” initiative, Commercialization Reactor has fully switched to a remote mode. This means that our active Acceleration program for Batch 4 start-ups is now going on-line.
This week we have invited prof. Shailendra Vyakarnam to start series of trainings on Reimagining the commercialization of science & technology enabled innovation.
Prof. Shailendra Vyakarnam is an educator, mentor and entrepreneur. He has designed and delivered courses for science, technology based entrepreneurs for over 20 years; mentored hundreds of new and emerging businesses and has himself over 6 start-ups and new ventures. He is currently mentoring 4 technology business as well as having invested in three of them.
